Volunteer Opportunities

Community Service at Northview

Many of our students are interested in volunteering their time to better our community. Starting with the graduating class of 2002, special recognition will be awarded at commencement to those graduates who accumulate the following number of volunteer hours:

  • Class of 2007 - 200 hours

Students who volunteer for 200+ hours will receive a certificate and pin at graduation.

Myth versus Fact

Myth: You have to be a member of Interact to receive the special recognition at graduation.
Fact: Anyone can volunteer their time and get recognized at graduation. You do not have to be a member of any club to do this.

Myth: If you don't volunteer 50 hours a year, then you will not graduate.
Fact: This is an optional program - it is not a required component of graduation.

Program Requirements

Your hours must be:

  • from a nonprofit organization
  • confirmed and verified by a supervisor of the nonprofit organization - via signature on a completed volunteer form
  • turned in to and documented by the Interact advisor - Mrs. Peace in guidance

You may not get payment or compensation of any kind for your work.
You will not be credited with these hours if they are conducted to fulfill a Northview class requirement.

Process

Volunteer Hours Forms can be obtained from:

  • Your advisor
  • The Individual Volunteer File located in the Guidance Center

Information regarding various volunteer opportunities can be obtained in the file cabinet in the Guidance Center.
Each student is responsible for contacting the nonprofit agency and making arrangements to volunteer.
Once you have volunteered, be sure to fill out the Volunteer Hours Form completely. Incomplete forms will not be accepted or credited.

VOLUNTEER HOUR PROCEDURES

BEFORE VOLUNTEERING, obtain an “Official Volunteer Hour Form” in the Guidance Office.  They are located at the entrance on the left, in the top drawer of the file cabinet, in the front of the drawer.

Fill out the form in its entirety!

To get credit, your name, ID # and graduation year must be marked.  The name of the organization and their address must be listed.  A description of what you did must be included.

Be sure to fill out a separate form for each organization you volunteer with.

If you are with the same organization volunteering on multiple dates within the same semester, you can use one form.  However, use the back of the form to write each individual date and hours for that date making sure that your contact person initials each one separately.

If you volunteer for the same organization for a whole school year, you will need to fill out two separate forms—one at the end of each semester.

On the front of the form for “Date of Volunteer Hours”, you should write in the last date of the current semester that you volunteered for this particular organization.  Also include the total number of hours for this organization for one semester.

Make sure that you and your contact person sign at the bottom, listing a phone number to reach your contact person.

It is advised that you have the volunteer form turned in right after you volunteer.  Be sure to make a copy of the completed form to keep for your records.

Bring your completed form to the Guidance Office and place in the wire basket on top of the file cabinet where the volunteer forms are.

Follow these procedures to have your volunteer hours included on your transcript.
